Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forum, but think it's such an awesome resource for people with inquiries on their travels to Japan judging by other peoples questions and responses! : )

So basically, I have tons of questions for a trip to Japan I will be going on next summer. I know it seems early to be asking for information, but want to make sure everything seems ok before booking my flight!

So me and about 2-3 friends will be going for a month, and our biggest problem / concern is that none of us have ANY experience with Japanese. Luckily we can learn some Japanese before going, but it will be limited. Will this be a problem? Are there English translations in the subways? Basically, I just want to know if a lack of Japanese will lead to total chaos!

Thanks so much!!!

Jeremy

In Tokyo and Kyoto you should have no problem with only having English. There are so many signs, and not just on the train system in English. I have always been surprised how easy and accessible it is for English speakers.

Most stations have at least one train ticketing machine that works in English.

Language only becomes a problem when you go away from the main cities, but normally you can get by. Most Japanese can read and write some English. Generally the Japanese are happy to help you out.

Definitely, you'll be fine with English and a basic grasp of a few Japanese sayings in the main cities.

It's always nice to have a decent command of the language though, and the locals will appreciate the effort.

Have fun!
