SONY CYBER-SHOT U10 REVIEW

Sony Australia recently announced the launch of a new ultra-small digital still camera (DSC), the Cyber-shot U DSCU10. Weighing in at a mere 90 grams and measuring only 85 millimetres in length, the DSCU10 packs a healthy 1.3 megapixel CCD punch and an extensive range of features that take the mystery out of shooting great images.

Combining quick and easy operation with state-of-the-art miniaturisation technology and Sony’s signature styling, the Cyber-shot U will go with you anywhere, anytime. Best of all, the DSCU10 carries a suggested retail price of just A$499.

One the major limitations with many digital cameras is their performance in low light. “The Cyber-shot U allows everyday users to capture unexpected moments such as a night out on the town, meeting friends for coffee, the last day of school or a family dinner,” said Anthony Hearne, Product Manager – Digital Imaging, Sony Australia. “This ultra compact and stylish digital camera is ideal to have on hand ready to take great photographs at a moment’s notice and slips easily into your pocket or bag when not shooting.”

The point and shoot simplicity of this diminutive – 8.5(W) x 39.8(H) x 28.6(D) mm – yet stylish camera belies the depth of technology within. An extensive range of features and functions ensure the user gets a great shot every time.

These include:

  • 1.3 megapixel Super HAD CCD for excellent crisp, clean 6’ x 4’ prints
  • Auto power-on as the lens cover is slid open, ready to shoot in one second to capture the day-to-day, unexpected moments in your life
  • Built in lens cover ensures the lens cap is not lost or easily dislodged resulting in the lens being scratched
  • Auto focus, Auto White Balance and Auto Exposure for a great shot every time
  • Automatic 10cm macro for impressive close ups
  • New scene selection which automatically adjusts the camera settings to suit one of three shooting environment modes. Soft Snap provides optimal balance and clarity when capturing people or inanimate objects, Twilight Illumination Snap will help keep track of that great night out with your friends, or Vivid Nature will enhance the natural colours – especially blues and greens – of landscapes and your adventures in the great outdoors.
  • Five shot VGA Burst, allowing five continuous shots at 0.5 second intervals to be taken
  • Fast shooting and playback interval times for speedy capture and review of your images
  • 15-sec MPEG Movie function (160 x 112 resolution) when a single image won’t tell the full story

The camera incorporates a luminous 1-inch LCD screen and comes with two AAA Ni-MH batteries, battery charger, an 8MB Memory Stick and USB cable. Multimedia software completes the package, enabling video and pictures to be quickly and easily uploaded to the PC for editing, printing, posting to a website or emailing to friends.

The very small batteries will limit the number of photographs that can be taken on one set of batteries. I would strongly recommend buying additional set(s) of batteries if you are going on a holiday. While you can use disposable batteries even modern cameras like the Sony Cyber-shot U10 will eat them very quickly. I would also strongly recommend the purchase of larger module. The real limitation with this model is the lack of an optical zoom lens, but there are very few in the market at this price that offer this feature.
