It focuses on works created after 1945 for collection and exhibition, and some of their collections were moved from Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno. The museum spent large amount of money on Girl with Hair Ribbon by Roy Lichtenstein when it opened, which became controversial. That triggered a series of debates on local government’s purchasing a work of art.
Total floor area of the museum is 33,515 square meters, which makes it the largest among Japanese art museums (but it is the second largest if annex is taken into account). There are totally 10 permanent exhibition rooms on the first floor and third floor. In exhibition rooms on the first floor, you can follow about 30-year path of changing art from those reflecting fear and chaos after the World War II to those created in 1970s. There are works of contemporary artists in the exhibition rooms on the third floor, so you can see the various trends of contemporary art.
