Koto is one of
Tokyo's special wards located east of the
Tokyo metropolitan centre, bounded by the Sumidagawa to the west
and the Arakawa to the east. Its major districts include Kamedo, Kiba,
Kiyosumi, Monzen-nakacho, and Shirakawa. The newly-developed
waterfront area of Ariake is in Koto, as is part of
Odaiba (including the popular Palette Town
shopping complex).

Sightseeing Spots in Koto
Museum of Contemporary Art, located in Miyoshi, is a public museum
specialising in contemporary art. It was built within the large site
of metropolitan Kiba Park, and opened in 1995.
It focuses on works created after 1945 for collection and exhibition,
and some of their collections were moved from Tokyo Metropolitan Art
Museum in Ueno. The museum spent large amount of money on Girl with
Hair Ribbon by Roy Lichtenstein when it opened, which became
controversial. That triggered a series of debates on local
government’s purchasing a work of art.
Total floor area of the museum is 33,515 square meters, which makes it
the largest among Japanese art museums (but it is the second largest
if annex is taken into account). There are totally 10 permanent
exhibition rooms on the first floor and third floor. In exhibition
rooms on the first floor, you can follow about 30-year path of
changing art from those reflecting fear and chaos after the World War
II to those created in 1970s. There are works of contemporary artists
in the exhibition rooms on the third floor, so you can see the various
trends of contemporary art. There is a vault great space for
exhibiting contemporary art works, which have tendency to become
larger.

Tokyo International Exhibition Center, located in Ariake, is run
by Tokyo Big Sight Inc. It contains large exhibition halls and a
conference tower. It used to be Harumi Fairgrounds, and moved to the
current place in 1996.
Telecom Center
Telecom Center is a high-tech building for sending and receiving
information in and out of the country. There is a lookout on the 21st
floor where you can see the panoramic view of
Odaiba.
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology is a national
university. Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University
of Fisheries merged and opened a new university in October 2003, and
started to take new students in April 2004.
Students in the Faculty of Marine Technology are mainly being trained
to be ship’s personnel or researching on logistics. On the other hand,
students in the Faculty of Marine Science are studying mainly on
fisheries and food research.
The research on logistics by the Department of Logistics and
Information Engineering, Faculty of Marine Technology, is attracting a
great attention due to the increasing need for logistics and SCM among
businesses. Professor Saburo Tsuruta, dean of the department, was
given the Logistics Merit Award by Japan Institute of Logistics System
in 2004 fiscal year. In addition, Professor Yoji Takahashi is
considered one of the top researchers on modal shift and social
experiment on transport.
Suzaki Kyujo
Suzaki Kyujo was a baseball ground located in 3 Toyo. It held
official baseball games in 1930s.

Kamedoten Shrine (Kamedo Tenjin)
Kamedoten Shrine, located in Kamedo, is dedicated to Michizane
Sugawara. It holds festivals for plum tree (from February to March),
wisteria (from April to May) and chrysanthemum (from October to
November).
Tomioka Hachimangu
Tomioka Hachimangu, located in Tomioka, is the biggest shrine
dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war, in Tokyo.
As a symbol of Fukagawa area. Also famous for Fukagawa Hachiman
festival, one of the three biggest festivals in Tokyo. The portable
shrine(=Mikoshi) of This festival is the largest in Japan.

Fukagawa Fudodo is a Tokyo branch of Naritasan
Shinshoji Temple (Chiba).

Kiyosumi Garden
Kiyosumi Garden, located in Kiyosumi, is a metropolitan park. There
are Suzumi Tei and Jyabu Jyabu Pond within the site.
Metropolitan Kiba Park
Kiba Park extends across not only Kiba but also Hirano and Toyo.
It has a total area of 24.2 hectares. Unlike other places surrounding
it, the park contains a lot of green.
There used to be many storages and timber yards related to the timber
industry, but they moved to Shinkiba when the new landfill site was
opened there. After the industrial function was removed from Kiba,
Koto Ward built the park as a part of regional disaster prevention
program.
Traditional arts of Kiba no Kakunori, which held at the Event Pond at
the middle of the park and close to the entrance space in every
October, reminds us of old days when there were timber yards.
Wakasu Seaside Park
Wakasu Seaside Park, a marine park run by Bureau of Port and
Harbour Tokyo Metropolitan Government, faces the Tokyo Bay. It is one
of the largest parks in Tokyo. The park contains
various leisure facilities such as a golf course, cycling road, camp
site and fishing place. It is one of a few places in Tokyo,
where you can escape from the bustle of the big city and enjoy the
sea. You can see the panoramic view from Kisarazu,
Yokohama to
Tokyo Disney Land on sunny days,
which makes the park a great place for couples.
