Shinjuku Map - See a map of the Shinjuku area or refer to our Tokyo map to see where Shinjuku is located within Tokyo.

Shinjuku Highlights:

  • Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building - the best observation deck in Tokyo.
  • Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a park with an eminent garden.
  • Kabukicho - A district well-known for bars, restaurants and red-light district with street prostitutes, brothels, and other sexual commerce. Located northeast of Shinjuku Station.
  • Nishi-shinjuku - Tokyo's largest skyscraper district. Several of the tallest buildings in Tokyo are located in this area, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, KDDI Building and Park Tower. Located west of Shinjuku Station.

  • Okubo - Tokyo's best-known Korean district.
  • Waseda - Surrounding Waseda University, one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan. Nearby Takadanobaba is a major student residential and nightlife area.
  • Ichigaya - A commercial area in eastern Shinjuku, site of the Japan Defence Agency headquarters.
  • Shinjuku Central Park - A park popular with local office workers.

Shinjuku Sights

For people watching, the place to be is the large square in front of the station's Kabukicho entrance, next to the Studio Alta shopping center.
Hanazono Shrine in Kabukicho off Yasukuni-dori is more remarkable for its location than its appearance, but it's a nice place to take a breather.
Tokyo Opera City is a skyscraper with a shopping centre and art museum that often has interesting multimedia exhibits. Take the Shinjuku Line subway to Hatsudai station.
