TOKYO POPULATION

With a population of over 12 million, or about 10 percent of Japan's population, Tokyo is by far the country's most populous and most densely populated prefecture. The centre of Tokyo is located at 35°41' North, 139°46' East (35.68333, 139.7667).

Technically Tokyo only has a population of 8.34 million people, but the greater area of Tokyo (continuous urban areas) includes a total of 12.369 million. The issue of determining Tokyo's population is further complicated by Yokohama. There is now continuous urban land use between Tokyo and Yokohama, such that Yokohama could really be considered a "suburb of Tokyo".

The satellite image below gives you some idea of the size of Tokyo's population, but this image does not include all of the urban areas of greater Tokyo. For further information see Tokyo Japan Map.
