Shizuoka Attractions

Nihondaira
Nihondaira is a scenic area. At the centre of Shizuoka city, from the altitude of 308 m, Nihondaira is famous for the view of Mt. Fuji, the Izu Peninsula, the Japanese Southern Alps, Shimizu Port, and Suruga Bay. It was selected as one of the top 100 sightseeing spots of Japan in a competition in 1980. There is a ropeway connecting Nihondaira to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine in 5 minutes.

Sunpu Castle

Sunpu Castle (駿府城 Sunpu-jō) is a reconstructed Japanese castle. The sobriquet of this feudal fortress was the "Castle of the Floating Isle."It was also referred to as Fuchu Castle (府中城 Fuchu-jō) or Shizuoka Castle (静岡城 Shizuoka-jō).

Shizuoka Sengen Jinja

Shizuoka Sengen Jinja (静岡浅間神社?) is the name for a collective group of three Shinto shrines now forming a single religious corporation, located at Mount Shizuhata in Aoi-ku, Shizuoka. These shrines are the Kambe Jinja (神部神社), Sengen Jinja (浅間神社), and Ohtoshimioya Jinja (大歳御祖神社). The main festival of the shrine is held annually on April 5.

Kunozan Tosho-gu Shrine

Kunozan Tosho-gu (久能山東照宮) is a Shinto shrine in Suruga-ku in the city of Shizuoka. Kunozan Tosho-gu Shrine is the original burial place of the first Shōgun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and is thus the oldest of the Tōshō-gū shrines in the country. The main festival of the shrine is held annually on April 17, although its spring festival from February 17-18 is a larger event.

Mariko-juku

Mariko-juku (鞠子宿 Mariko-juku) was the twentieth of the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō. It is located in what is now part of Suruga-ku in Shizuoka. Mariko-juku was one of the smallest post stations on the Tōkaidō. Old row-houses from the Edo period can be found between Mariko-juku and Okabe-juku, its neighboring post station, in Utsuinotani. This post town also had strong ties to the Minamoto, Imagawa and Tokugawa clans.

Shizuoka Festivals

There are three main festivals on Shizuoka's calendar.

  • Shizuoka Matsuri (静岡まつり): The Cities April Festival during the high point of the year for Cherry Blossom, a flower-viewing procession, imitates the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu's custom of taking daimyo (feudal lords) to Sengen Shrine to view the cherry blossoms.

  • Abekawa Hanabi (安倍川花火): A gigantic firework display held upstream of Shizuoka's Abe River in late July.

  • Daidogei World Cup (大道芸ワールドカップ): Street Performance World Cup. Probably the biggest event on Shizuoka's Calendar, it is an annual International Busker's Festival, held in November. It includes various shows such as juggling, pantomime, magic, etc. Performers gather from Japan and abroad to create wonder and laughter here and there in the town. From 2005, it expanded from a 3-day to a 4-day festival.
