Oriental Artifacts is happy to announce the opening of their 1st shop in Toorak Village Melbourne: From Japan comes our biggest range of artifacts. We have, over the years, bought a wide range of kimonos (including yukata, haori, homongi, furisode, uchikake, tomesode [both kurotomesode and irotomesode], and shiromuku) which can be worn or used for decoration. They are either modern or vintage and come in all sorts of materials (silk, cotton, hemp, synthetic, …). The haori short overcoats, the black kurotomesode formal kimonos, and the colourful uchikake wedding kimonos are stunning on a wall, hanging on a bamboo pole. The shiromuku is a wonderful alternative to the usual Western white wedding dress, and can be worn for the wedding ceremony and reception. Brides can also change into a bridal furisode or choose the more elaborate uchikake. We also propose an extensive range of obis (kimono sashes) such as the fukuro, maru (many of which are Nishijin Kyoto brocade), Nagoya, and hanhaba, as well as all sorts of accessories (zori, geta, obiage, obijime, juban, hakama, …). We have also transformed these wonderful textiles to give them a more modern and useful appeal. We are using the fabric to make lamp shades, pillows and cushions, bed covers. We have created our own brand named ‘dezain’ which is the Japanese for ‘design’. We also sell a small set of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, both modern and antique from artists such as Sharaku, Utamaro, Hiroshige, Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Taiso Yoshitoshi, Kiyonaga Torii, Eisen, … . They depict samurai, geisha and various scenes of everyday life in Japan. We provide a line of screens that includes hand-painted oil on canvas and water-colour on rice paper and gold leaf screens. Finally we have recently started with a line of affordable Chinese and Korean furniture which includes wedding cabinets, altar tables, side tables, buffet tables, coffee tables, tanzu step cabinets, and a small range of baskets. |
